Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) & Middleware (MW) Development

GBL Systems staff has significant experience in the design of operating systems and executives. This experience encompasses the entire development cycle from the specification of requirements and performance through integration and test. GBL Systems was involved in developing, optimizing, tailoring, and fine tuning embedded real-time executives for naval aviation platforms for over 13 years.  The effort included development of MW standards that allowed the reuse of application components to be reused across different Navy aircraft with different architectures for each Mission Computer.  GBL’s experience encompasses the entire development cycle from the specification of requirements and performance through integration and test.  With significant experience in the design of operating systems and executives, GBL has the capability to design and develop a MW portal that has the desired flexibility of handling existing communication protocols with an inherent capacity to process evolving communication protocols developed in the future.

The following highlight the executive and operating system experience that GBL Systems can provide to you.

Mission Data Processor Executive (MDPX)

The F-14B Upgrade Program employs a distributed processing architecture designed around new and upgraded F-14B subsystems. The MDPX is the executive which controls the F-14B Mission Computer's Mission Data Processor and MIL-STD-1553 remote terminals on the F-14B Avionics Bus. GBL Systems staff:

  • Defined MDPX software requirements
  • Participated extensively in all design reviews of the MDPX conducted by Computing Devices International
  • Reviewed and supplied comments on all MIL-STD-2167 documents generated for the MDPX
  • Generated MDPX performance scenario test requirements
  • Developed a rapid prototype for a subset of MDPX capabilities at the Naval Air Warfare Center, Pt Mugu, California
  • Conducted training seminars for Computing Devices International personnel on how to design the MDPX
  • Conducted Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) on the MDPX
  • Defined MDPX Middleware standards

Bus Controller Remote Terminal Application Program (BCRTAP)

The F-14B Upgrade Program employs a distributed processing architecture designed around new and upgraded F-14B subsystems. The BCRTAP is the executive which controls the Airborne Weapons Group AWG-15H, Control Indicator Bus Controller (CIBC) Computer, and MIL-STD-1553 remote terminals on the F-14B Armament Bus. GBL Systems staff:

  • Defined and generated a BCRTAP software requirements document
  • Generated BCRTAP performance scenario test requirements
  • Conducted training seminars for Fairchild and U.S. Navy personnel on design options of real time executives for the AWG-15H CIBC
  • Participated extensively in design reviews of the BCRTAP conducted by Fairchild
  • Reviewed and supplied comments on all MIL-STD-2167 documents generated for the BCRTAP

F-14D Mission Computer Executive

The F-14D avionics system consists of a distributed processing architecture designed around two AYK-14 Mission Computers. The Mission Computer executive supports the definition and control of the F-14D's dual-processor AYK-14's and MIL-STD-1553 remote terminals. GBL Systems staff:

  • Defined executive software requirements and wrote Program Performance Specification (PPS)
  • Designed executive in the areas of bus control, remote terminal operation, and discrete management. Wrote Program Design Specification (PDS)
  • Implemented designs in assembly language
  • Integrated executive modules and integrated executive with AYK-14 hardware
  • Developed performance and stress test software for the executive
  • Integrated executive with the Mission Computer operational flight program
